My little introduction! | Lesley Leigh Photography | Destination Photographer | Flagstaff, Arizona
Okay, I am going to attempt to do a little introduction of myself today. I should warn you though. I am not a writer. My art I not in words. But I am going to do my best to let you know me a little better.
Colorado was my home for years. I was born and raised in Cortez. Greeley is where I attended college. Believe it or not, I did not attend college to be a photographer. That actually started with a high school film photography class. I learned in a dark room and I fell in love. My grandfather gifted me my first camera, a Ricoh, which is considered vintage now. That trusty camera is still capturing beauty today. While in college, I assisted and second shot for Becca, who happens to be my second shooter now. I love that lady! After my husband finished college in Fort Collins, we moved to Spearfish, South Dakota and I found out I was expecting our first child, a daughter we named Lily Jane. I stayed home and did the mom thing and later had Penelope Iris. They are amazing girls with very different personalities and they were initially what I took a lot of picture of. During this time, I also assisted a newborn photographer in the area.
Once Penny was born and grew a little, we moved to Saratoga, Wyoming. This was when I decided to finally establish my business. I did everything photographers should do when starting out. I filed my business with the state, got insurance, and figured out how to collect and pay taxes. I cannot stress enough how important it is for small business owners to do this. Don’t be sketchy and try to keep from doing this. I know it means you will end up having to charge more to cover your costs, but believe me, it is well worth it. You want to make sure you, your family, and your assets are protected. I didn’t want anything to negatively impact my husband or my girls. Wyoming was difficult in some ways, but I made some amazing friends while we lived there. But, we were ready for something bigger with more opportunities for our girls. My husband got a job in Flagstaff, Arizona so we packed out and headed south.
Flagstaff has been amazing so far. We have only been here a week but we are jumping in head first. I have already started to network with other photographers, most from the Phoenix area. I love how close I am to my family now. My sister lives in Mesa, Arizona, and my other sister lives in Globe. My parents still live in Cortez, Colorado (near Durango) so we can plan weekend visits now. I hate that we are further from my husband’s side of the family. They all still live in Greeley, with one exception. His sister lives in Poland so she is far from wherever we go! FaceTime has become a staple for my girls to chat with them and to keep up with their cousins. We have already started meeting people, trying churches, breweries, and coffee shops to find out place in this gorgeous town. I can already tell that we are going to love it here and I cannot wait to start photographing the sweet people that are around the Flagstaff area.
